Modal is fundamentally made from beech wood and is therefore a pure cellulose fiber. The raw material is debarked, split into small chips, processed, and finally spun into a fiber material using a mechanical spinning process with nozzles. These processes can be carried out entirely industrially, which is why many textile manufacturers and fashion experts classify modal as a chemical or synthetic fiber – despite its natural origin.

Due to their water absorption capacity (buffering, wicking), clothing made from modal fibers is comfortable to wear. In contrast to true synthetic fibers, whose raw materials are derived from petroleum or natural gas, modal fibers are made from the renewable resource wood. According to the manufacturer, the fibers are biodegradable. Furthermore, they do not contain the herbicides and pesticides commonly used in conventional modal production, which are sometimes found not only in the environment but also in clothing.
