Cashmere wool (also known simply as cashmere) is a very fine and soft natural fiber obtained from the undercoat of the cashmere goat. The name is derived from the Kashmir region. The native species of lop-eared, horned cashmere goats, with its approximately 20 breeds, comes in white, gray, brown, or black. It belongs to the family of domestic goats, a subspecies of wool goats. In its native region, cashmere wool has been handcrafted into high-quality textiles since around 1000 BC. The undercoat of the cashmere goat, after being cleaned of its guard hairs (synonymous with awns), is particularly fine, with a diameter of only 15 to 19 micrometers and a length of 25 to 90 millimeters. The average diameter of the hairs must not exceed 19 micrometers.

Cashmere is considered one of the finest wools due to its fine fibers, offering excellent heat retention properties at a low weight.

Cashmere is one of the most valuable and expensive natural fibers and is therefore often offered mixed with merino wool or other sheep's wool.
